Ilkley Golf Club member Jack Lampkin was part of the Yorkshire team that defeated Lancashire by 11½ to 6½ to retain the Northern Counties league title at Lindrick Golf Club.
Yorkshire went in to the final match of the season knowing that they needed to beat top of the table Lancashire to overtake them and claim the title. A drawn match would see the Red Rose county crowned winners for the 2016 season.
In a match that was played in poor weather conditions throughout the day, with heavy rain falling almost all day, the morning foursomes matches finished level at 3-3. Jack Lampkin, playing with Ben Brewster from Wheatley Golf Club, won their Foursomes match on the last hole to ensure that the two sides were level at the lunch break.
In the afternoon singles matches, Yorkshire took control of the game and won three of the first four singles points available. A further three and a half points soon followed to ensure that the overall match and title were secured.
Jack Lampkin was playing in his usual position of 12th (last match) in the singles order, an important position that is often pivotal to the outcome of the entire match. Indeed, after the match Yorkshire Team Captain Darryl Berry explained “There is no better No 12 in the country than Jack, as I have said before. Time and time again he comes in with a win.”
Jack certainly backed up his Captain’s comments with a victory over Jack Shelley from Formby Golf Club by a margin of one hole. The final match result was a 11½- 6½ in favour of Yorkshire.
Congratulations to the Yorkshire team and everyone involved in retaining the Northern Counties title.
Well done to Jack Lampkin on his fantastic contribution to the Yorkshire side this season. Jack has played in three out of five matches throughout the season and won 2½ points out of a possible 3 in his singles matches.
