Congratulations to Edward Cowan who finished as runner up in the Yorkshire Matchplay Championship at Selby Golf Club, held on 16th – 18th September.
The Matchplay Championship is contested between the players that finished in the top 32 places in the Yorkshire Amateur Championship played at Moortown Golf Club in August.
As one of the qualifiers, Edward was up against some of the best players in the county but fought his way through four rounds to reach the final, the highlight of which was a victory in the semi-final against Yorkshire County player, Martin Brown from Pike Hills Golf Club, by a margin of 8&7.
In the final Edward was up against Bailey Gill from Lindrick Golf Club. After finding himself three down at one stage in the match, Edward fought back to level the match after 16 holes.
Unfortunately for Edward, his opponent birdied the 17th hole, his seventh birdie of the round to regain the lead and despite his best efforts, Edward could not win the last hole to force a play-off.
Whilst Edward was slightly disappointed not to win the final, reaching that stage of a competition containing the majority of Yorkshire’s best golfers represents a fantastic achievement.
Well done Edward!
