Ilkley GC member, Jack Lampkin, made an impressive start to the season by retaining the Raywell Classic at Hessle Golf Club. The 36 hole scratch strokeplay competition is the third event on the Yorkshire Order of Merit calendar.
It was a day of varying weather, with relatively benign conditions in the morning round. Jack took full advantage and finished with six birdies in his last ten holes to take the lead at the halfway point with a four under par score of 68.
However, in the afternoon the weather changed, with strong winds and heavy rain providing a real test for all of the competitors. Jack admitted afterwards that the conditions were ‘probably the worst I have ever played in’, but he still managed to return a very impressive round of 74 to claim the trophy by three shots from Tom Broxup of Cookridge Hall Golf Club.
This is the second consecutive year that Jack has won the Raywell Classic and has put him in joint first place on the Yorkshire Order of Merit alongside Ben Brewster (Wheatley GC) and Tom Coulson (Cleveland GC).
Jack’s next Order of Merit event will be the Hawksworth Trophy at Bradford Golf Club on Saturday 28th May when he will defend the trophy that he also won last year.
