In March, our President, Captain, two of the Green Committee members and Green staff were delighted to have the opportunity to visit our great friends at Portstewart Golf Club to see how they are preparing the course for the Irish Open in July.
It was excellent to observe their fifteen green staff working tirelessly to ensure the course is in the finest condition when it welcomes the world’s top golfers and media.
Course manager at Portstewart, Bernard Findlay, is a real authority on parkland and links golf. Indeed, he lectures on the subject and trains other greenkeepers, when he is not working on the course. Our Green team were very interested in what he had to say and picked up some extremely valuable information which we can utilise at Ilkley.
The team then visited nearby Royal Portrush Golf Club as they prepare for the Open in 2019.
Our head greenkeeper, Duncan, and his colleague David, really did appreciate the opportunity to see this level of green keeping first hand and are looking forward to introducing some of the techniques to provide an even better course for our members and visitors.
As an added bonus our Chairman of Green, Richard Patchett scored his first hole in one at the 15th at Portstewart. Well done Richard.
