Our Captain, Richard Cadman, and Immediate Past Captain, Paxton Dewar OBE, together with our scratch team, were delighted to do battle with their counterparts at the magnificent Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club mid-May.
Once again S&A were the perfect hosts and our team was royally entertained, resulting in a wonderful day for all, playing a magnificent course.
To make the day complete, it was a privilege to meet Dr David Marsh, MBE, one of the country’s finest amateur golfers and a great friend of our honorary life member Rodney Foster.
David was captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in 1990, having previously been president of the Lancashire and then English Unions between 1973 and 1975. He was the youngest captain of Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club in 1967.
David won the English Amateur in 1964 and 1970, and represented England on 75 occasions. He also participated in the Walker Cup, being a member of the victorious Great Britain and Ireland team in 1971. He went on to captain the team in 1973 and 1975.
Interestingly, David was also a great friend of Rodney’s brother George who caddied for him during the English Amateur in 1964 at Hollingwell when, ironically, he beat Rodney in the final by one hole!
Although Ilkley was victorious against S&A on this occasion, to quote a well-known cliché, golf was definitely the winner!
We look forward to playing hosts to the S&A team next year.
